Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD: solar charging notes
Researched and last reviewed October 15, 2026
The Model Y Long Range is one of the easiest EVs to pair with home solar. It is efficient for an SUV, and Tesla's own app can charge it only from surplus solar if you also own a Tesla Powerwall. For an average 35-mile commute it needs about 6 to 7 modern 400 W panels.
Real-world efficiency
The EPA rates the 2024 Long Range AWD (19-inch wheels) at about 29 kWh per 100 miles combined (about 3.45 miles per kWh), including charging losses. Bigger 20-inch wheels use more energy. In Edmunds' real-world range test, the newer 2026 Long Range matched its EPA range of 327 miles.
Winter range
Recurrent's study of more than 10,000 EVs found the Model Y lost about 24% of its range at freezing temperatures (32°F / 0°C), better than the 30% average for all EVs. A 24% range loss means about a third more energy per mile, so cold-climate owners should plan for 1 or 2 extra panels.
Home charging
Tesla lists up to 11.5 kW (48 A) on its Wall Connector, about 44 miles of range per hour, which recharges an average day of driving in under an hour. Tesla also notes that some newer Model Y versions are limited to 32 A (7.7 kW), so check your car's maximum before buying a charger.
Charging only from solar
Tesla's "Charge on Solar" feature charges the car only with surplus solar power. It needs a Powerwall with solar at the home, Wi-Fi for the car and the Powerwall, and a solar system without export limits. Without a Powerwall, you can use a third-party solar-aware charger instead.
Can it power your home?
A 2024 Model Y cannot power your home. In October 2026 Tesla began offering Powershare home backup on new US Model 3 and Model Y orders placed from October 1, 2026, and it requires a Powerwall 3 and a Wall Connector.
Practical tip
If you work away from home during the day, set the car's "sun" charge slider low (for example 50%) so it tops up from the grid only when needed, and let solar do the rest on weekends and sunny days.

Your panels make power during the day. To charge at night from your own solar, you'd need about 7 kWh of home battery (a Tesla Powerwall 3 holds 13.5 kWh). If your utility offers 1:1 net metering, the grid can do this job instead. Do you need a battery?

Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD Solar Panel Sizing by Commute Distance
Based on the Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD's rated efficiency of 3.45 mi/kWh and standard 12% Level 2 AC-to-DC onboard conversion losses, here is the estimated solar generation required for different commute distances:
| Commute Tier | Daily Miles | Daily Need (kWh) | 400W Panels | Roof Footprint | Annual Solar Cost | Annual Gas Savings |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short Urban Commute | 20 mi/day | 5.8 kWh | 4 Panels (1.6 kW) | 84 sq ft | $182/yr | +$1,000/yr |

Solar Inverter Matching
For a typical 7-panel (2.8 kW) array powering the Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD, a 3.8 kW to 5.0 kW AC inverter (such as Enphase IQ8+ microinverters or SolarEdge Energy Hub) prevents clipping while maximizing low-light efficiency.
Home Battery Storage Requirement
Under modern utility billing structures (like California NEM 3.0 or Arizona RCP), daytime solar export credits are discounted by 70–80%. A 10 kWh to 13.5 kWh home battery allows you to store excess daylight solar and charge your Model Y Long Range AWD overnight for zero grid cost.
Level 2 EVSE Circuit Sizing
The Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD accepts up to 11.5 kW on AC Level 2. A hardwired 48-Amp smart EVSE installed on a 60-Amp dedicated circuit breaker provides maximum speed, replenishing 35 miles of range in just 50 minutes.
Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD Solar Charging Frequently Asked Questions
Engineering and financial answers for prospective and current Model Y Long Range AWD owners considering rooftop solar.
Q1:How many solar panels do I need to charge a 2024 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD?
To power an average American daily commute of 35 miles in a Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD, you will need approximately 7 modern 400-Watt solar panels (approx. 2.8 kW DC array). This produces roughly 10.1 kWh of clean energy each day, covering your daily driving, including charging losses (which are already part of the EPA rating).
Q2:Can I charge my Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD with solar panels without a home battery?
Yes, you can charge your Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD directly during daylight hours if your vehicle is plugged in while the solar array is producing electricity. However, if you commute away from home during the day and charge overnight, you will need a residential battery storage system (such as a 10–13.5 kWh Tesla Powerwall, Enphase IQ Battery, or FranklinWH) or a utility with full 1:1 Net Energy Metering (NEM).
Q3:How much money will solar charging save on a Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD compared to gasoline?
Charging a Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD with rooftop solar costs approximately $0.09 per kWh over a 25-year panel lifetime (before any state or utility rebates — the 30% federal Section 25D credit ended for systems installed after 2025), or roughly 2.5 cents per mile. Compared to a similar gasoline vehicle averaging 27 MPG at $4.37/gal, driving 35 miles per day on solar saves approximately $1,751 per year in fuel costs, or about $17,510 over 10 years.
Q4:What size Level 2 home charger is best for the Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD?
The 2024 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD supports an onboard Level 2 AC charging speed of up to 11.5 kW. A standard 48-Amp Level 2 EVSE on a dedicated 60-Amp circuit breaker delivers 11.5 kW, capable of recharging the 75 kWh battery from 20% to 80% in approximately 3.9 hours.
